CHAPTER THREE

My head was pounding when I woke up the next morning, which was why I took more pain pills and crawled back into bed.

Sleep eluded me.

Josh’s face kept popping up whenever I closed my eyes. Why was my mind so fixated on someone I’d just met?

I’d never had something like what I was experiencing happen before. I wasn’t even sure I liked him but, damn, I found him attractive.

After trying without any success to go back to sleep, I dragged my ass out of the bed to find it was already after noon.

Calling for room service, I ordered coffee and something that would be easy on my stomach before going to peek out my patio door to see if my neighbors were out next door. The deck next to mine was empty, so I decided to take my lunch out there when the porter delivered it.

Sitting under the umbrella at the small glass table, I wondered what I was going to do to fill my days. I should have planned ahead, but then, a spur of the moment vacation didn’t leave much time for that sort of thing.

Starting up my laptop gave me nervous jitters, because the temptation to check my emails was strong.

I resisted and instead pulled up the resort’s site to find out what sort of excursions they offered. It only took me a few minutes to decide to book myself a kite surfing lesson and then a cliff diving excursion to the other side of the island. I didn’t know how to scuba dive, but I seriously thought about taking a few lessons to pass the time. Maybe later when I grew bored once again.

Since I wasn’t feeling all that well, I decided to stay on my patio where I could still watch the waves roll up onto the beach but didn’t have to deal with the sand. I knew I was supposed to be doing something more but I just couldn’t get up the will to move more than necessary. I vowed to never drink that much wine again in my life as I sucked back another ginger ale.

Just as I was about to order something for supper, my room phone rang, startling the crap out of me because I’d grown used to the only sound being that of the ocean and the distant shouts of children on the beach. I slowly lifted the receiver from its cradle, not sure what to expect when I answered. “Hello?”

“Hey, Nev!” The voice on the other end was almost drowned out by the music in the background but I still recognized it.

“Hi, Josh.”

Why was he calling me?

“You sound surprised,” he said and then laughed, “I hope me calling is a good sort of surprise.”

“I’m not really sure which one it is. I think that will depend on why you’re calling,” I said.

“I need you!” He sounded drunk and it was–I looked at my watch–only six. “Please come and save me from Monica!”

My brow furrowed as I tried to puzzle out why he’d need to be saved from his sister.
